International Conference on "Sustainable utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture" was held from 18 to 20 October 2016 in Piešťany.
The conference was organized by the National Agricultural and Food Centre - Research Institute of Plant Production Piešťany, Gene Bank on the occasion of 20th anniversary of its opening.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic, Director General for Agriculture Ing. Štefan Ryba, PhD., Senior Advisor Dr. Ing. Elena Glvačová a Representative of the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia Dr. Avetik Nersisyan and Deputy Director General of National Agricultural and Food Centre doc. Ing. Jaroslav Slamečka, PhD. The invitation was accepted by former employees Research Institute of Plant Production Piešťany Ing. Julius Rychtárik, DrSc. and Ing. Severín Kubinec, PhD., who 20 years ago contributed to the foundation of the Gene bank.
The conference was attended by 58 significant scientists and researchers from the 16 countries: Israel, Hungary, Czech Republic, Serbia, Austria, Armenia, Poland, Morocco, Moldova, Georgia, Turkey, Belarus, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia. At the conference 26 lectures were presented relating to the evaluation of genetic resources, their conservation and sustainable use in agriculture and food. Within the poster section there were exposed 26 poster presentations that address not only the issue of cereals, fodder crops, pulses, as well as medicinal and aromatic plants, grapevine, fruit plants, and many others. A book of abstracts was published from lectures and poster presentations.
